Families before fingerprints
Green and herbal, citrus, tropical, mineral or neutral families are practical buckets. Add acidity, body, texture, and fruit direction before proposing the grape. No single note—gooseberry included—is a fingerprint.

Required before tasting
Meet the wine and grape, learn the governing idea and vocabulary, then read where the model stops. Complete these chapters before opening the video lesson.

Methoxypyrazines and volatile thiols can contribute important aromas, but concentration, interactions, site, harvest, fermentation, and the wine matrix influence what is perceived.
Green or herbal, citrus, tropical, floral, mineral or neutral, and uncertain are broad enough to be repeatable. A family can be useful even when tasters disagree about lime versus grapefruit. Specific descriptors may enrich communication, but the family plus structure carries more diagnostic weight than one supposedly magical smell.
Methoxypyrazines can contribute green impressions, and volatile thiols can contribute potent fruit aromas. Concentration, thresholds, interactions, oxidation, fermentation, and the wine matrix influence perception. A compound name does not convert an aroma into a one-to-one grape barcode, and the same family can arise in other varieties.
Marlborough’s rise created a powerful commercial shorthand, while Loire traditions offer other reference points. Within each region, site, vintage, harvest, fermentation, lees, oak, and producer goals create diversity. Use regional descriptions as context for patterns, not as promises printed by geography.
Before proposing Sauvignon Blanc, require evidence from at least three categories: aroma family, acidity, body or texture, fruit direction, and production style. Write the strongest alternative explanation. If one aroma is carrying the entire identification, lower confidence rather than adding theatrical certainty.
The line worth keepingIndependent clues agreeing is stronger evidence than fruit bingo.
