The period in context
Phylloxera vastatrix—now Daktulosphaira vitifoliae—was associated with North American grape species that had evolved greater tolerance. Once it reached European vineyards, susceptible Vitis vinifera roots suffered severe damage and vines died across enormous areas.
Debate was fierce: chemicals, flooding, sandy sites, resistant hybrids, and grafting all had advocates. Grafting European varieties onto selected American-derived rootstocks became the durable large-scale solution, although rootstock choice remains specific to soil, pests, water, vigour, and climate.
