Port and Douro red blend
Douro blending developed in mixed vineyards where many varieties could be harvested together, then became more deliberately composed. Fortification stops fermentation for Port; dry Douro reds use much of the same cast without keeping the sweetness.
- Touriga NacionalAdds colour, tannin, black fruit, violet perfume, and concentration.
- Touriga FrancaContributes floral dark fruit, finesse, and reliable blending volume.
- Tinta RorizAdds firm structure and red-to-black fruit; elsewhere it is Tempranillo.
- TempranilloThe same variety as Tinta Roriz, though the Portuguese blending context changes its role.
- Tinta CãoA small-berried seasoning grape for acidity, perfume, colour, and longevity.
