Signals from smell, taste, touch, temperature, and irritation are processed through partly distinct pathways, yet everyday perception binds them into an object such as peach, coffee, or wine. Memory and expectation help stabilise that object. The same integration that makes eating effortless also makes analytical separation require practice.
Olfactory sensitivity often falls during repeated exposure, but recovery depends on compound, concentration, duration, airflow, and person. Adaptation to one odour does not imply total loss of smell. A careful experiment controls timing and records the sample sequence rather than treating sensory fatigue as personal failure.
Run the nose-pinch exercise twice: once without descriptive prompts and once after reading a short aroma list. Keep separate records for the two trials. The comparison demonstrates both retronasal contribution and the way language can direct attention without proving that any newly noticed aroma is false.
